While on one of our many cemetery trips for history’s sake, my husband and I found ourselves walking around the beautiful East Cemetery in Litchfield, Connecticut. Mister Rain immediately noticed that many gravestones had plants surrounding them, something we had never seen before. Speaking to a man visiting his wife, Janet’s, grave, he informed us that this is common “in these parts.” He had brought water to care for the lush greens placed lovingly around her marker.
It is a privilege to experience the big, famous sites throughout this great country. But it is the small moments, when we are made aware of the unique ways we all live, that impact us the most.
Two hundred miles separate my home from this burial ground. We do things differently, despite us all being Americans. We can learn from each other, enjoy a new way of doing things. Maybe we bring the discovery home with us, making it our own.
This country is the gift we have been given. Travel is the gift we give ourselves.
