Going to a concert at a venue close to home in 2008, the opening act was a local singer-songwriter, Dan May. I was so moved by his music that I went home that evening after the show and purchased four of his songs on iTunes. I looked him up as well, reaching out via email. He responded quickly, starting a conversation that went on for years with emails as well as at his performances that we attended. I bought his CDs immediately, it was not long until I knew every word by heart.
Dan’s songs are the whole package. The melodies are both catchy and layered. His lyrics are a unique combination of fun and smart. At least at first listen. Then you focus in on what he is saying and you are struck by the intelligent, detailed nuance of every delicious, shrewd word, expertly placed by this masterful storyteller.
Then there is the voice. I have never heard another singer with a similar sound. Dan’s vocal stylings are like warm honey poured over you. They envelop you, leaving you to ponder and wonder where it has been all your life.
In my opinion, and Mister Rain’s as well, Dan May is the most underrated artist we have ever encountered. I don’t pretend to know what his dreams have been for his music career but why he is not world famous and ducking awards being thrown at him is as big of a mystery as is how I lost my sight. And that’s a doozy.
One of Dan’s songs, “Sister Rain,” touched me as soon as it and my ears met. When I started this website it was originally called, “Searching For A New Job Is A Full-Time Job,” as I had been let go with the rest of my organization when our parent company shut us down at he start of the 2008 Financial Crisis (which began in ‘07). I continued writing after I got back to work, wanting a new name, though, for the site. I asked Dan if I could use “Sister Rain”, he gave his blessing, here we are.
I want to share with you Dan’s “Sister Rain.” The story that it tells could not be further from my reality, but as music does, it spoke to me that evening 16 years ago. I would never be so presumptuous to call my writing ” art”, but I do hope something you read here resonates. This song has changed my life in ways I never could have imagined. It is the name of my life’s work, my passion, my purpose. I am Sister Rain.
