As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of Independence, I was curious as to what was happening this week in 1776.
June 29, 1776
When my mom was still alive, she and I spent a lot of time at the New Jersey shore. By choice, with perfect contentment in my decision, the days of me sitting on the beach in the Garden State are over. However, I do know many people who can’t wait for summer to arrive, to begin their drives on the Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway; my dear friend, Mary Anne, has a second home in Wildwood Crest.
And so as I looked to see what George & Co. were up to this week in 1776, I was tickled to discover that on June 29, 1776, Patriot gunboats engaged and defeated the British armed brig HMS Rebecca during a skirmish in Turtle Gut Inlet off the coast of Wildwood Crest.
I know that this country has problems, but when I think of the American Revolution, I cannot help but to consider the everyday things we enjoy, knowing that a different outcome in the Fight For Independence could have changed everything for us.
Setting up beach chairs and umbrellas along the edge of the Atlantic is one of these activities. Nothing says freedom more than having your toes in the sand, a cold beverage in your hand and the ability to take a refreshing dip in the water when the sun, high in the brilliant red, white and blue sky heats things up.
As you enjoy the East Coast beaches this summer, be sure to face the ocean and raise your glass to the land on the other side of the pond. Thankfully that is not where it ended, but it sure is where it began.
