As I explain in “My Son Is A Beaky Eater”, Piper showing any interest in human food is rare. We never have cereal in the house but a recent three-week long bout of bronchitis for both myself and my husband had us looking for something we could have without much effort, if we were even hungry, which for the most part, we were not.
Our bird before Piper, Cato, a lutino cockatiel, loved cereal. Parrots should not have milk so we only ever gave him dry pieces. We have had cereal since we got Piper but it was many years ago. I remembered he had been curious about it at the time but I couldn’t recall if he ate any then.
Now, nearby when I poured Rice Krispies into my bowl, he immediately stopped what he was doing and ran over to me. I filled it extra high, thinking that if he sat on the side of the bowl it would give him easy access. He climbed aboard without hesitation and started crunching.
I would like you, please, for a moment, to think about what Piper’s beak, which can crack a peanut shell and, let’s be honest, skin and I suspect a bone, would do to a Rice Krispie. Before long, pulverized Kellogg’s product was on the table and the floor. But I didn’t care. That’s what brooms and hand vacuums are for. All that mattered was that Piper was having fun and trying something new. It wasn’t a fruit or a vegetable but it wasn’t food from the bird store either.
Who needs snap, crackle and pop when you’ve got crunch?
