Working with a web designer on renovating Sister Rain, we talked about my brand and identity. I am a wife, a bird mom and a friend. But when asked about my intention for Sister Rain, I answered off the cuff. It sounded good to my own ears and the designer nodded his head as if I was making perfect sense. It wasn’t until later when I began to further investigate branding on my own that I started to make a list of who I am as a writer and think about the nature of the stories I want to tell.
As I contemplated in depth about Sister Rain, I realized that this is not a bad exercise for anyone to do. Since this site solely consists of essays about my life, I am the merchandise. And isn’t that what all of us are, the commodity we offer the world? We’ve all met people who calculate every look, word and deed but the majority of us are an organic result of our upbringing, beliefs and interests.
I’m not here to give you homework but it might be interesting for you to think about what qualities and personality traits distinguish you to everyone you meet. Of course we all would say we’re a good person, we’re kind to others. But what do you stand for?
You can search online for exactly what you want in a book or a lamp but can you define yourself? I’m not talking about what you put on a resume or say during a job interview, nor am I referring to what you enter into your dating profile. I am asking about the day in and day out you. It’s not as easy as you think!
No matter what you determine your personal brand is, there is an infinite amount of items available with a few clicks, deliverable to your door the next day. But remember: there is only “One Left In Stock” of you and me.
