Below is one of the photos that accompanied the story I shared a week ago, Two In A Million (click here) about two Cooper Hawks I met last year. When Piper graciously allowed me, once again, to use his Friday Sister Rain spot for a story about a couple of raptors, I had no idea he would be so competitive.
Five days after I posted that story, we sat waiting at the vet for Piper’s annual checkup. The sun was streaming into the window across from the receptionist desk, and Piper, in his carrier, was getting a large dose of Vitamin C. As he stoically waited for the indignity that would soon come*, he took in every dog that walked by. Some stopped to look at him, but I would like to think that it was his stone cold stare down had them moving on quickly.
My husband saw what I could not. Taking a picture of Piper and handing his phone to me, I found my own Mini Cooper in the photo (shown above this story’s title). The sun shining through the mesh back wall of his carrier had created a pattern of spotted feathers.
The doctor gave Piper a clean beak of health, for which I am grateful and determined not to take for granted. He may have looked like a bird of a different kind for a few minutes, but Piper went into the veterinary office happy and healthy and left just the same.
