The Outside Scoop

Do you spend a lot of time sitting outside at home? I don’t know why, but I rarely do, despite having a nice big front porch and a very pretty backyard.

When I’m on a trip, however, all I want to do is sit outside. It really doesn’t matter the weather, I will use the deck / balcony / patio even if I have to bundle up. I’ll do it even if buildings make up a good part of the scenery, as was the case at my hotel in Heber City, Utah (shown in the accompanying photos). I am underselling it a little, after all, there was also the occasional small plane flying close overhead and some very cool snow-capped mountains.

Travel is all about experiencing a myriad of people, places and things different than our life at home. So much of what we encounter when we are away cannot be replicated once we have returned to our daily reality.

With this in mind, I always try to bring a little piece of each location home with me (click here for Extending Your Stay: #3 The Souvenirs). It turns out, though, that all I have to do is walk out my front or back door. I don’t have white summits, an ocean, the desert or a roadside attraction out there, but I do have, depending on the time of year, fresh air to breathe in, the warm sun on my face, a soft breeze in my hair, snowflakes on my tongue, a puddle to walk through and even the humidity, a sticky reminder of exactly where I live in the way that central air cannot.

It’s all out there on any given day, 12 steps from where I sit now writing this story. Sure I would love a freshly powdered peak or two peek-a-booing in view of my house, but that’s okay. If the mountain won’t come to Sister Rain, Sister Rain must go to the mountain.

Until then, Sister Rain must go outside at home.
