Extending Your Stay: #3 The Souvenirs

Posted on May 14, 2026May 21, 2026 By Sister Rain

Once you return to reality after a trip, it doesn’t take long for the vacation to disappear from view, much like the sun you watched set over the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California.

There are several things I do during and post travel that help keep the memories and the feelings of time away alive long after the luggage has been put back in the closet.

The Souvenirs

When I first became an ardent traveler in my 20s, my primary souvenir of choice was a t-shirt. Over time, I was sure to look for a magnet and a Christmas ornament as well.

I eventually loved finding items that I can display and enjoy, acquiring a meaningful collection of small mementos from around the country. Ornaments remain a must, and the suitcase usually includes a t-shirt with the price tag still on. New traditions are, where appropriate to take, rocks, as well as radio stations (click here for Vacations Stations).

It’s icing on the cake to return from a place you have visited with a tangible reminder. And it’s the candle on top to bring home more than dirty laundry.

More to come . . .
