Extending Your Stay: #1 The Diary

Posted on April 30, 2026 By Sister Rain

Once you return to reality after a trip, it doesn’t take long for the vacation to disappear from view, much like the sun you watched set over the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California.

There are several things I do during and post travel that help keep the memories and the feelings of time away alive long after the suitcases have been put back in the closet.

The Diary

As my husband and I vacation, I make bullet point lists describing what we did, often including times and weather conditions. Creating a folder in Notes, naming it the location and dates of the trip, I make a Note for each day. I also document flights and their fares, so if I return to a destination, I have an idea of schedules and pricing.

In addition to keeping the diary in real time, I also go back after we get home, checking the trip log against the photos we took and our recollections.

Full disclosure, it can be work during a time when you are trying to relax and forget the stress of daily life. But I can jot down a few notes while we are out exploring, then in the evening when we return to the hotel or the rental house, I can fill in the details. Also, since I am unable to help with the driving, I can document the trip from the passenger seat. But you do you. A few short bullet points may be enough information for you. I like to be more thorough, especially if it is something I will be writing about later for Sister Rain.

I cannot tell you how many instances there have been where I used one of my travel diaries to get the name of a restaurant to recommend to someone or simply when Mister Rain and I are reminiscing. Where did I have the best lobster I’ve ever had? Maine. Remember the dorsal fins of all those whales? Port Townsend.

Did that actually happen?

Let me check my diary.

Yes, it surely did.

More to come . . .
