Extending Your Stay: #2 The Photos

travel
Posted on May 7, 2026 By Sister Rain

Once you return to reality after a trip, it doesn’t take long for the vacation to disappear from view, much like the sun you watched set over the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California.

There are several things I do during and post travel that help keep the memories and the feelings of time away alive long after the suitcases have been put back in the closet.

The Photos

My husband and I have a process when it comes to photos we have both taken during a trip. We do quick edits of our own pictures while we are still away; once back home, Mister Rain goes through mine, since he can see properly. We then combine both sets into one Shared Album on our Apple devices. Then my husband will look at all the photos, deleting duplicates and those of a poor quality. When he is finished, we have a completed Photo Album specific to the trip.

Next, I will review all the pictures against The Diary (click here for Extending Your Stay: #1 The Diary) to ensure I haven’t missed anything in my trip notes. If I find that I have, I add it.

One inevitable occurrence, every time without fail, is that I will enlarge a photo on my iPad that Mister Rain took and discover something that I wasn’t aware of when we were actually there. Of course I would prefer to be able to see things in real time with my own eyes, but since that is not possible, there is a fun element to this delayed reveal. Not only do I get to relive our trip, I get to experience a few new things too.

Our spare bedroom closet is filled with photo boxes and photo albums, all from trips taken before our phones took pictures. Now images reside digitally, a blessing for me since I am unable see a printed photograph or those photo books so popular these days. It could not be more convenient to reenjoy a trip or an event. With several scrolls, a couple of clicks, you can be back in Nantucket or Sedona.

They say that the places you visit become a part of you. Now they can be found in the palm of your hand.

More to come . . .
