While going through files in our cabinet to clean it out as much as possible, I spent some time going though the “Piper” folder. Its sections include saved tags of his favorite toys taped to stock paper to make reordering easier, reports from his annual checkups at the vet, instructions for caring for him should something happen to his dad and me plus documents from his adoption from A Helping Wing Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary in August 2012.
There was only one photograph in the entire stack, it was of Piper hanging on the inside of his enclosure at the rescue. The morning we went to the rescue to pick him up to bring him home, the owner (and angel) of A Helping Wing told us to go ahead to the outbuilding where he was located, get him and bring him into the house where we would sign the papers that would officially make us his.
Before I opened the door, before I extended my finger for Piper to step up onto, before I brought him to my chest, before I took my other hand and cupped it around him to secure him to me to walk across the yard to the house, I asked my husband to take a picture so we could see what kind of toys he had and how they were arranged.
As I looked at the image on the 8 1/2” x 11” piece of paper, I realized that this was the last moment before Piper was brought close to my heart and crawled right into it. This was right before I became his forever mom. This was the moment before my life would never be the same again. Because after, a 100-gram small parrot lived inside me and would until the day that I die.
