We were back at our dome at Clear Sky Resorts in Cannonville, Utah after dinner at the property’s restaurant,Sky Nova, before sunset.
Getting comfortable in the Adirondack chairs on our patio, my husband and I waited. The resort has a strict lights out policy at 10 pm for night sky viewing; when the sky had reached optimum darkness, so had all the domes. The stars, however, well, it was their time to shine.
I raised my eyes to the sky and an inconceivable thing happened.
I could see the stars.
I have not been able to see a star since my vision loss 14 years ago. But on this crystal clear evening, with the contrast between the deep blackness and brilliant whites, I could make them out. I was even able to identify the Big Dipper.
“I can see the stars,” I told Mister Rain in a quiet voice, afraid that any sudden noise would somehow scare away this seemingly impossible moment.
“You can?,” he asked, in a hush. He, too, recognized the fragility of this precious occurrence.
Swallowing the deep breath I had taken in an attempt not to cry – I did not want even a single tear to adversely impact my sight – I assured him that I could.
Staying outside until close to midnight, it was 62 degrees when we went in and got into bed. It was then that an equally miraculous thing happened: neither one of us got on our devices. Instead, we both laid on our backs looking up at the sky through the panoramic glass of our dome.
“I can still see them. I can still see them.”
I don’t know when we fell asleep, but when we both woke up at 2 :15 am we were each still on our backs even though neither of us is a back-sleeper. It was chilly, my weather app said it was 54 degrees. Turning on the tower heater, the dome quickly warmed up.
We stayed awake for awhile, not wanting to exchange the magic of this place for more sleep. They say the galaxies may be limitless, but our time here was not.
