A Bird In The Hair

Posted on July 24, 2026 By Sister Rain

It’s a Tuesday morning, I’m working at the dining room table. Piper is playing in the adjacent living room, my keystrokes mingle with the sound of his toys hitting the floor after he pushes them off the coffee table.

It becomes quiet; Piper preens himself for a bit before getting something to eat in his mansion (we never call it a cage; if you saw it you would know why). And then there is the squawk that means only one thing: come get me.

Once we are settled back at my work area, Piper makes himself comfortable on my shoulder. The Sharpies and my notebook are too great a temptation, though. He quickly climbs down my arm, waiting at the point where my short-sleeve shirt sleeve ends, indicating to me that I should position my arm in a way that allows him to step down onto the table.

The Sharpies go first, tossed to the ground. The notebook, however, seems to confuse my smart little guy: Why can’t I pull this paper away from the others?

Returning to my forearm then back to his perch on my shoulder, he cleans himself a bit then turns so that he is facing behind me. The distance is less than an inch yet he takes a running start in order to charge through my hair to get himself up against my neck.

Lucky I have a lot of writing to do because I am not going anywhere for awhile; I don’t want to disturb him. A more perfect Piper moment there is not. A bird in the hair is worth, well, everything.
