We met in Port Orchard, Washington. I don’t know how long you hung from a branch or how recently you fell to the ground. I do know that you did it gracefully; look at you – how could anything else be possible?
I understand the edicts about nature, “leave no trace,” “take only pictures.” Had there not been hundreds of you on the ground, I would not have asked my husband to find you.
I carefully placed you in the back of a writing tablet, between the last piece of paper and the cardboard backing. I packed the pad in the zippered inside pocket of my suitcase’s lid. You made the 2,800 mile trip like a champ. Mister Rain soaked you in glycerin for a few days, then let you dry. An 11” x 14” double-sided frame was purchased. You are large and you are impressive from all angles, so different than the leaves we find in our yard.
You’ve come a long way but we’re glad you’re here. You are a constant reminder of a lovely week in the Pacific Northwest. That area gets a bad rap for its wet weather but without rain you wouldn’t be you. And that’s a leaf lesson we can all carry with us wherever we go.
