Arriving at a restaurant for breakfast while on vacation, my husband looked for a place to park. Located in a residential neighborhood with no parking lot, the only thing you could do was drive around until you found something on the street.
It didn’t take Mister Rain long to see an open spot (he’s always lucky that way). As I opened the car door, I smelled bacon and syrup. Stepping out, my right foot landed on the area between the curb and the sidewalk; instead of grass as is the norm, it was made of rocks.
It looked really nice but rut-roh. No blind white mobility cane was going to assist with this. Not even my trusty trekking poles would help here with ankle rolling prevention. All I could do was very carefully place my foot, testing out each stone’s stability before I committed to it.
The distance to the sidewalk was only a few feet yet it felt like forever until I was able to stick the landing on the flat, even sidewalk, grateful that I had not hurt myself.
I can’t say for sure that if I was fully-sighted the journey would have been easier, though I did notice other people traversing the rocky terrain without looking down in just a few quick strides, continuing their conversation while doing so. I doubt they were even aware of what they were walking on.
As I enjoyed my delicious breakfast, I realized I would have to tackle Stonehenge again to return to the car. There was no place for my husband to pick me up without more rock climbing.
I made it back to the passenger seat of our rental, all my bones intact, my stomach full. Things had started out rocky, but that always makes the taste of success sweeter, don’t you think? Pancake sweeter, in fact.
