Ensign Peak – Salt Lake City, Utah

An hour after landing in Utah, Ensign Peak was the perfect way to get an overview of Salt Lake City. Literally.

Located north of downtown, the 5,417-foot dome-shaped hill is known for its panoramic views as well as its historical significance to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In July 1847, just two days after their arrival into the area, Brigham Young and other pioneer leaders climbed this peak to survey and plan the grid system for Salt Lake City.

It was a little hazy, but sunny and 85 degrees. Although I couldn’t see very well, the ick that I felt coating me after hours of travel was carried away in the soft breeze. Even with a higher altitude than I am used to, the crisp, clean air cleansed my lungs after flying across the country in a tightly sealed tube.

All of Utah was ahead of me, and over 1,400 miles would be covered in the coming eight days. At the top of Ensign Peak, Salt Lake City lay before me and I understood what Young & Co. saw in this place. Though only in this state for a week, I definitely believed in the possibilities.
