People don’t seem to be able to talk about New Year’s without bringing up resolutions, whether they believe in them or not. And although one thing most people agree on is that you should look ahead and not back, I offer a different approach to the next 12 months.
I have been in therapy for over 10 years. As I go about my week between appointments, I keep a list of things that have occurred, even if they don’t fall in the “needing assistance with” category. At the beginning of each session, as we capture what has gone on the last seven days, it is nice for me to have a record, since anymore it seems like one day is equivalent to twenty because life is so busy. When my appointment is over, I move what we have talked about to a master year-specific Note on my iPhone. What I have found is that looking at the list at the end of December allows me to see what I have done, where I have been, the times I have struggled. All of it, the good and the bad, make me grateful.
Reflecting on 365 days captured in bullet point form is a great resource, providing me with ideas for the future by way of been there, done that, what’s next? And, if like me, you have a challenge you live with every day, the list reminds you what you are capable of. There is not one thing on my 2024 list that says “YOU CAN’T DO THIS.” That doesn’t mean things aren’t difficult sometimes, but everything on that list is an accomplishment, not a failure.
On a personal note, 2024 is the year that I resurrected Sister Rain after a five-year hiatus. Since February 16th, I have posted a story every Monday – Friday, a total of 229 publications as of today. Maybe 2025 will be the year you pick something back up or you try something new. Whatever your 12 months of bullet points shows you in a year from now, I wish you a New Year filled with the people and places that you love, Sister Rain posts and the knowledge that every hill you climb will earn a coveted bullet point.
Let’s do this!
