I am not nor ever have been a girlie girl. But there was a time early in my career when I wore dresses, heels and pantyhose to work everyday. The thing I find most ironic is that in those days, in my 20s, I plastered my face with liquid foundation I most certainly did not need. These days, when I could use it more than ever, I can’t be bothered. Granted, I am unable to see the details of my face due to my visual impairment, but I certainly know the rings of my trunk give away my age, much like the inside of a giant sequoia. I do like to wear some makeup, though, and have figured out ways to apply it despite not having much sight to do the intricate work. With a small, lighted 15x mirror I am able to put on mascara, eyeliner under my lower lashes, I can fill in my brows with a tinted brow gel or an eye shadow color that matches.
A few years ago I discovered Laura Geller’s Baked Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation. I love it. I am not an influencer nor have I ever been paid to promote a product or a place I have visited. Although this is for everyone, I want to sound the alarm for the low vision and blind community. You can do your own research on this particular product and decide for yourself but I think it is terrific. It is a cream baked into a powder, it evens out your skin tone, also adding a warmth to it. It doesn’t cake in any of your lines or wrinkles nor does it crease. Since it is buildable, you can go with light or medium coverage. If, like me, you are unable to see well, this foundation is perfect. Just stay consistent with the amount of pressure you use when swirling your brush around the powder, then apply to your entire face, brushing it evenly, by feel if you have to, all over your face.
Speaking of the brush, Geller’s Kabuki Brush is fantastic. It comes with a cover which is great for your purse and travel. The brush is retractable, allowing you to control the density of the bristles and therefore the coverage level.
Earlier this year I tried the Baked Face Palette by the same company. I was prepping for a trip and was looking for a way to take a little more makeup than I normally would wear in daily life that wouldn’t take up much room, would be easy for me to apply without much sight while not causing me to look like a lady of the evening in the middle of the day. I watched the video Laura herself does showing how to use each of the powders in the kit and felt confident I could handle it. I ordered the palette, only to find it more fool proof than I expected. It is simple to use and since it consists of neutral colors that are light in texture, you really can’t make a mistake.
If this legally blind non girlie girl can do it, so can you. After all, even if we can no longer see ourselves the way we once did, we still want to put our best face forward.
