Today I went for a pedicure with a good friend and after getting our toes spruced up, we stopped at a local coffee cafe for sugary treats and iced versions of coffee and tea. High humidity is here in its oppressive glory and cold beverages in an air-conditioned hot spot was the perfect way to continue the pampering. It was busy; people were there alone on their laptops and several others were having business meetings.
Sitting there with my dear friend, catching up with her, carrying on, laughter threaded into more serious topics, I felt so much more like me than I do when I’m home every day by myself. Sure I stay busy, but my life is so different now from what it used to be. She knew me long before my vision loss and remembers who I once was and knows the person I am today. To her I am just Sister Rain. And when I returned home, I thought about the woman she reintroduced me to and was so grateful to have met her again. Of all the networking going on in that cafe, this was the best connection of them all.
