The Dog Days Of Summer

life

Though mid-June, the humidity that accompanies this month and the two that follow every year in Southeastern Pennsylvania had graciously delayed its arrival into the region. On this day, temperatures in the high 80s were not formed by heavy, thick, warm air that once inside your body covers your bones and organs with a damp blanket. Instead, the sun gently heat-lamped everything in its light, while a soft breeze kept you feeling cool and comfortable.

Exiting a store on the property of an Amish family in Lancaster, the clothing and towels on the lines moved lazily with the wind. A small dog lay in the tall grass, the green blades surrounding his little body and camouflaging him almost completely from view. The pup had found the perfect spot in the sizable shaded area created by an equally large tree whose leaves lifted in synchronicity with the hanging laundry.

Time moves differently here, where wide open farmland is intermittently sprinkled with farmhouses, barns and silos. This picture perfect moment stood still and I with it. This was a single afternoon, but I knew without a doubt that in this place there are many just like this. The dog days of summer, indeed.
