The Snow Below

What is it about snow that makes the world appear so magical? I completely understand the hassle and danger that snow can create, but if you have nowhere you have to be, and shoveling is not required at this moment, the brilliant white covering will transform your world.

If I think about such a scene, I picture a forest or a small town all decked out for the holiday. Perhaps this is because I know that it takes no time at all for a city’s traffic to turn the pristine blanket of compounded flakes into a dirty rag.

This changed for me on a Sunday morning in early December, when I woke up in my hotel room in Arlington, Virginia to a kind of winter wonderland I had not previously experienced.

From the unique perspective eleven floors up, the roofs of the closest houses below brought to mind a shelf at The Container Store holding kitchen canisters with white lids.

In the distance, the Pentagon, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial and the US Capitol, so familiar to us all, stood peacefully, a direct contrast to the chaos and mayhem currently emanating from this city.

Zooming in via the iPhone camera, this photo of the Washington Monument, a lone sentinel, is striking.

Front and center was the Air Force Memorial (click here) reaching high into the sky, from where the snow had come.

When my husband and I had to cancel plans we had that morning due to the weather, I didn’t mind. I felt very fortunate to have this opportunity to see the Nation’s Capital from this vantage point. It was a view that certainly could not be ignored. My last Snow Day was a long time ago, but standing at the window of room #1120 had me reuniting with the enchantment of a snowstorm.
