Unhidden Figures

life
Posted on September 4, 2024January 3, 2025 By Sister Rain

I am relatively fearless which has served me well. I am, however, scared of mannequins. Now I am not talking about the bald, faceless fiberglass and plastic models you would find in department stores (remember them?) wearing clothes and accessories perfectly. I am specifically referring to the life-sized figures found at exhibits, visitor centers and museums. I remember going to a US history experience as a young girl and being terrified to approach each display that showed period-dressed life-sized figures in scenes depicting our past. Fear of replicated people runs deep, friends!

You would think that my visual impairment would be a help in this instance, that the lack of detail would lessen the scary factor. But not seeing them clearly is as unsettling to me as when they were in crisp, living color. Go figure.

The National Civil War Museum

Even the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Busts in Canton, Ohio kind of freaked me out!

On a recent trip to the West Point Experience Exhibit, there were quite a few of my worst nightmare in a place honoring those I hold in the highest regard. As you can imagine, this room in particular made me want to pass out. I felt like I was running a gauntlet walking past them, I kept my head down and moved quickly.

I love me some history, but I do not love me some life-sized figures. The only version of General George Washington I want to meet is the man himself. For that I would be more than willing to faint.
