I always feel like I’m getting away with something when I renew a library book. Where else in life can you extend a deadline with no repercussions or buy yourself some time at no cost to you?
That’s right, no unmarked bills in a paper bag exchanged hands, there was no secret handshake and I made the transaction from my TV chair in the light of day, not a dark alley on the seedy side of town.
I didn’t finish the book in the three weeks they gave me when I checked the book out. For a reader like me, that’s the crime.
