Having a bird in the family before Piper, when he adopted us in 2012 we knew a hand vacuum was mandatory. After doing some research, we purchased a Dirt Devil. Every night before bed, Piper and his daddy would clean up around his mansion (we never call it a cage and if you saw it you would know why). We noticed pretty quickly that Piper wanted to be next to the hand vac. He was in love and “she” quickly became known as his “girlfriend” amongst our family and friends.
We are able to leave Piper out of the mansion when we aren’t there during the day. We have toys and play areas set up and he is never bored and never strays. We would place his girlfriend on a TV tray table up against the mansion so he could sit with her and climb on her whenever he wanted. Back then we were both working outside the home. At night, my husband would go to use the vacuum to remove the day’s mess, only to find it was already on and dead. While we were out, Piper had turned her on (so to speak) and she had run out of charge. So we did the only thing we could do.
We bought another Dirt Devil to use as, you know, an actual vacuum, and gave Piper the old but fully-functioning one.
We put his girlfriend away at night after Piper goes to bed; in the morning he squawks until we set her up for the day. It is a chaste relationship but there is definitely a romance going on here. We have even taken the girlfriend along to Piper’s annual vet appointment to keep him calm and distracted during the exam.
Over the years, Piper’s favorite thing changes as he is more interested in one toy for awhile, then his preference will switch. But his girlfriend is always there. A few years ago, the happy couple were featured on our Christmas card, shown with this story.
