At 7:12 am on the first morning of vacation, my husband and I heard the loud sound of machinery being operated close by. He investigated, reporting that there were landscapers mowing and weed wacking the yard of our rental home. I was enjoying my coffee and a mimosa on the screened in porch. When the man with the trimmer got close, Mister Rain positioned himself in his sight line, yelling to him, “How long will you be?” He replied, “Fifteen minutes.” I texted the owner of the house to let him know, who quickly responded that they should not be there at this hour of the day. I am an early riser but my husband is not plus he had driven 10 hours the day before. I was surprised he was awake so early.
That evening at dinner, we had a rain storm, when we got back to the cottage, it was very humid. We put the air conditioner on in the primary bedroom, making it was very comfortable sleeping that night. I woke up at 6 am, and I began posting the day’s story on Sister Rain ans well as Instagram. At 12 minutes after the hour, the air conditioner shut off. I thought perhaps it had frozen up like our old unit used to . After a bit I plugged my phone in to charge discovering that the power was out. I got up after 7 am, but I could not make coffee. Mister Rain woke up, I told him of our lack of electricity, yet he decided to take a cold shower, announcing after, “I AM A MOUNTAIN MAN!” Who happened to be shivering. He googled and found that there was an area outage effecting about 200 homes, I also texted the owner of the property who looked into it, confirming what The Mountain Man had seen online. The ETA (Electricity Time of Arrival) was 8:45 am, it came back on about 8:30 am.
Our third morning followed by the remaining five were uneventful. But it just goes to show you, you can take yourself out of real life but it will find you. And just like every day at home, you have to laugh and try to go with the flow. Even if it’s icy cold.
