Have you ever hosted a foreign exchange student in your home? Or, perhaps you’ve been one yourself, spending a semester in another country, fully immersed in the culture and the language.
Your answer is probably no. However . . . do you share your life with a bird, cat or dog? If your answer is yes, you are not that far off from welcoming a high schooler from a different nation into your world. Think about it, most of us are spending our existence with a creature we cannot speak to in the way that we talk to everyone else in our lives yet we are no less connected to or communicative with them. Piper lets me know when he wants my attention, I am able to convey to him what a good boy he is. We both have no problem comprehending what it means when Piper falls asleep on my hand. Love is never having to say . . . anything. After all, a feathered or furry family member isn’t foreign, they are home.
